Breast augmentation, or enlargement with implants, is designed to make your bust-line fuller and more proportionate to your body frame. Women who can benefit from breast augmentation include those who:

  • Are unhappy with current breast size
  • Have experienced reduction in breast size/volume after pregnancy
  • Desire a correction of breast asymmetry

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular surgical aesthetic enhancement procedures in the U.S. It is an effective way to give your breasts a more youthful, sensual appearance, and to give the breasts added volume and better aesthetic balance with your body features.

Breast Implants

Breast implants come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and types. At your initial consultation with Dr. LeRoy, he will show you examples of different breast implants and discuss your ultimate goals with you. The idea is to have breast implants that fit your body type while achieving the look you want, in addition to having results that look not only beautiful, but also natural.

The main types of breast implants are:

Saline Breast Implants

Saline breast implants are composed of a silicone outer shell filled with a saline (saltwater) solution. They are the most popular breast implants available. Saline implants are proven safe and effective; however, sometimes they can cause a rippling appearance under the breast. They may also cause a condition called capsular contracture, where scar tissue forms around the implant giving the breast a hardened feel. However, in cases of implant rupture, saline is easily absorbed by the body.

Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone breast implants are made of a silicone outer shell and filled with silicone gel. This gives them a feel and appearance that many consider to be more natural than their saline counterparts. Rippling is less common with silicone implants; however, silicone is less easily absorbed by the body than saline, and it may be less noticeable if an implant ruptures. That is why it is important for those with silicone breast implants to have routine breast exams to ensure everything is working properly. Silicone implants may also require a larger incision during placement.

The Procedure

Breast enlargement surgery typically begins with an incision made in the underside of the breast, around the areola (the darker area surrounding the nipple), or the armpit. Whether the breast implants are placed above or beneath the chest muscle will be decided during your initial consultation. Once the implants are placed, Dr. LeRoy will close the incisions, working diligently to make any scarring from the procedure as minimal as possible. The entire procedure usually takes about one to two hours under general anesthesia, and can be performed as an outpatient.

Patients can expect some discomfort in the breasts for several days after the procedure; however, this can be controlled with medication. Some swelling, bruising, and numbness in the breasts and/or nipples can also be expected, but this should fade while you recover. Direct stimulation to the breasts and strenuous exercise should be avoided for the first three to four weeks after breast augmentation. Although breast enlargement is a major surgical procedure, patients are typically able to return to normal daily routines within five to seven days after surgery.
