Throughout my 23 years as a double board-certified plastic surgeon, I’ve seen more and more patients who want to take a different approach to their aging appearance—rather than being unhappy with the signs of aging they see in the mirror until it comes time for a traditional plastic surgery, they choose to address signs of aging as they arise so that they can continue to look their best throughout the years. The good news is that modern medicine allows me to offer numerous options for minimally-invasive facial rejuvenation procedures; the bad news is that this leaves many patients confused and unsure about which option is right for them. To offer some guidance, I’ve broken down two popular non-surgical treatments, Band Aid Laser Skin Resurfacing and Band Aid Skin Tightening (both of which have special pricing this month), into some simple questions to help patients understand which procedure may be the best fit for their needs.
What are your aesthetic goals?
In general terms, both Band Aid Skin Tightening and Band Aid Laser Skin Resurfacing address signs of aging. However, they approach this goal in two different ways. For patients who want to minimize wrinkles as well as age spots, acne scars, and other pigmentation concerns, Band Aid Laser Skin Resurfacing can improve all of these issues at once. Band Aid Skin Tightening, on the other hand, focuses solely on the firmness and texture of the skin and does not affect the surface skin, so this treatment is a better option for patients who are more concerned about lax skin and wrinkles than skin spots.
How much downtime does your schedule allow for cosmetic procedures?
Band Aid Laser Skin Resurfacing and Band Aid Skin Tightening are both non-surgical procedures, so they both require less recovery time than even minimally-invasive surgeries like the Band Aid Facelift. However, Band Aid Laser Skin Resurfacing does use tiny columns of laser light to perforate the skin and activate the body’s natural healing process, so a minimal amount of recovery time is usually needed. Band Aid Skin Tightening, on the other hand, typically requires no downtime because the procedure uses precisely controlled heat energy that targets the deeper layers of the skin, so most patients can go right back to their daily activity after their treatment is finished.
Can you fit multiple treatments into your schedule, or do you need to limit your procedure to one session?
Band Aid Skin Tightening increases the skin’s collagen production in a particularly gentle, gradual way, making it a comfortable treatment for patients. As a result, patients generally see optimal results after a series of five strategically-timed sessions. While the results of Band Aid Laser Skin Resurfacing also develop gradually as the new collagen continues to form, the full results are achieved with one treatment.
While asking yourself these questions can help you narrow down your options, it’s important to recognize that finding the right procedure is essential to achieving the results you’re looking for, and that this decision should be made as a combined effort between yourself and your plastic surgeon. Call my office to schedule a consultation when we can discuss your aesthetic options and your medical needs.
In terms of medical treatments, surgery is often thought of as being the most extreme option, and most people only require surgery a handful of times throughout their lives. As a result, many people who hear about Dr. John LeRoy’s originally developed line of Band Aid plastic surgeries have difficulty understanding how a surgery can be minimally invasive. Featured in the latest issue of Atlanta Magazine, Band Aid procedures involve unique strategies that allow them to be performed in-office with gentle numbing. To help our patients develop a better understanding of when and how these procedures can be beneficial, we’re answering some of the most common questions our patients ask about Band Aid plastic surgery.
How can cosmetic surgery be performed while the patient is awake?
To explain how cosmetic surgery can be performed using gentle numbing (local anesthesia at the treatment area) rather than using general anesthesia to make the patient fully unconscious, we’ll compare the Band Aid Tummy Tuck and the traditional tummy tuck. The traditional procedure uses an incision across most of the patient’s lower abdomen to remove excess skin and fat and to repair muscles that have been damaged and loosened by pregnancy. Because of the depth of this surgery, general anesthesia is necessary for patient comfort and safety. But a Band Aid Tummy Tuck focuses on removing excess skin, and because these patients have less skin to be removed and don’t require muscle repair, the incision is smaller and is placed strategically to address only the areas that need attention. With the minimal depth of the procedure and the smaller incision, the patient’s comfort and safety can still be maintained using local anesthesia.
Will the lack of general anesthesia make my recovery more painful?
Lowering the amount of anesthesia used does not leave the patient in more pain during their recovery; quite the opposite, in fact. Procedures like the Band Aid Facelift require smaller incisions and make less comprehensive changes, so the minimized extent of the surgery helps patients to recover more quickly and smoothly than if they had opted for a traditional procedure. To further minimize the discomfort of recovery, Dr. LeRoy injects Exparel® pain management into the incision site when the procedure is completed, providing up to 72 hours of post-surgical pain relief.
Are Band Aid plastic surgery procedures safe?
While minimally-invasive surgery seems like a new development, physicians have long been working toward the goal of making surgery easier to fit into patients’ everyday lives, and Dr. LeRoy has been at the forefront of this effort by performing Band Aid procedures for nearly twenty years. Because Band Aid surgeries are less invasive and less comprehensive, and because general anesthesia isn’t used, the risk of complications is actually lower than it is for traditional plastic surgery.
Are the results of Band Aid procedures more temporary than the results of traditional plastic surgery?
No cosmetic surgery can truly be called “temporary,” nor “permanent.” Take the facelift as an example. During the procedure, excess sagging skin is removed and the remaining skin and tissue is given a lifted, more youthful firmness. The procedure can take years off a patient’s appearance, but it does not stop the aging process. So while the skin that was removed will never “grow back,” throughout the years, the rejuvenated facial skin will continue to lose collagen and develop new wrinkles and laxity. Because the Band Aid Facelift produces more natural, less comprehensive results than a traditional facelift, it generally takes fewer years off the patient’s appearance, but for patients who are best suited to a Band Aid Facelift, the results are just as satisfying and long-lasting as those of a traditional facelift.
How do I know whether a Band Aid plastic surgery procedure is right for me?
Every patient’s aesthetic goals and medical needs are unique, and cosmetic procedures are not “one-size-fits-all.” Learning about the procedures you’re considering is a great first step, and the next step is to talk to the expert. Schedule a consultation with Dr. LeRoy to discuss your cosmetic concerns and other factors that affect your decision, and he can recommend and help you determine which option is the best fit for your needs and priorities.
Band Aid plastic surgery procedures are among the most popular cosmetic choices for our patients, because in many cases, they provide an ideal balance of the aesthetic improvement patients are looking for and the recovery time and expense they’re able to commit. However, they’re only part of the extensive menu of options that allows us to provide cosmetic treatments that are tailored to each patient’s unique needs. There’s no doubt that our society’s idea of beauty has changed throughout the years—just compare today’s fashions to those that were popular in the 1980s. And yet, one fact seems to stay the same—people want to look younger. Facial rejuvenation has long been one of the most popular reasons why patients seek plastic surgery. In fact, all of the top three cosmetic procedures in 2014 (BOTOX® and similar injections, facial filler injections, and chemical peels) are focused on minimizing wrinkles. But there are so many ways to accomplish this goal that many patients feel overwhelmed and a bit lost. So we’re tackling one of the factors that plays into our patients’ decision: how long the results of each procedure will last.
My patients have a wide range of options for facial rejuvenation, from non-surgical Botox® and dermal filler injections to the traditional facelift. Each procedure addresses signs of aging in a different way, and while Botox®/Dysport® and facial fillers are the only treatments that are truly considered to be temporary, the results of any rejuvenating procedure will fade because the procedure cannot stop the aging process. As the years go by, the skin will lose its elasticity and will develop new wrinkles. This is why the results of procedures like the Band Aid Facelift aren’t necessarily permanent (at least, not in the way that many people consider “permanent”)—if the surgery has taken ten years off your appearance, then in ten years, your aging will probably have progressed so that you look similar to the way you looked before your procedure.
Every patient ages differently based on factors like genetics, sun exposure, smoking, weight fluctuations, and skincare, and the results of each procedure vary as well. However, the graph below provides an estimate of how long most patients’ results last for several of our most popular rejuvenating procedures.
While it is important to consider how long you want your results to last before choosing a cosmetic procedure, it’s only one piece of the puzzle. The key to choosing the right option for you is to prioritize and balance your desired results with your needs regarding recovery time, cost, and medical considerations. The patients who are happiest with their results tend to be those who view facial rejuvenation as an ongoing process rather than a one-step project. For instance, periodic non-surgical treatments like Band Aid Laser Skin Resurfacing can help to sustain the results of a facelift and minimize those new signs of aging as they arise. Summer is a season that many of us look forward to. Outings and activities likes boating, swimming, and family vacations allow us to let loose and embrace a younger version of ourselves. So this June, at the offices of Dr. John LeRoy, we’ve designed our monthly specials to help you get a rejuvenated look to match your youthful summer spirit.
Band Aid Laser Skin Resurfacing
Many patients want a treatment that tackles several of their aging concerns at once, and laser resurfacing fits the bill. We use the precise DOT laser to perforate the skin with tiny columns of laser light. This stimulates and controls the healing process that causes the body to produce more collagen—the protein that gives our skin youthful firmness and elasticity. The loss of collagen with age is a major culprit behind wrinkles and lax skin, so by helping the body replace the diminishing collagen, Band Aid Laser Skin Resurfacing can improve the appearance of wrinkles, age spots, and even acne scars.
Band Aid Skin Tightening
Sagging skin is one of the most common complaints from patients who want a younger look, but many think that plastic surgery, like a Band Aid Facelift or a neck lift, is the only way to lift and firm the skin. As its name suggests, Band Aid Skin Tightening is a minimally-invasive way to tighten lax skin, and in fact, the procedure is entirely non-surgical. We use the advanced Protégé system to send a unique and controlled heat energy into the deeper levels of the skin while leaving the surface skin unaffected. The result is firmer, younger-looking skin with no scarring and no downtime.
Cosmetic Facial Injectables
For patients who have more specific “problem areas” and those who want quick results, several injectable products can give them a more youthful look in a treatment that takes just minutes to complete. Dermal fillers like Restylane®, Juvéderm®, and Juvéderm Voluma™ XC can replace facial volume that has been lost with age, improving the look of wrinkles and areas of the face that have a “hollowed” appearance. Botox® and Dysport®, on the other hand, soften wrinkles around the eyebrows and forehead by relaxing the underlying muscle that is giving the skin a creased or “furrowed” look.
At the offices of John LeRoy, MD, we take pride every day in helping our patients to be their most beautiful and confident selves, and our June specials aim to make beauty a more affordable goal.
