Botox® and Dysport®
Frown lines, crow’s feet, and other facial wrinkles often combine to make a person look older and more tired than they physically are. BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport®, a purified form of botulinum toxin approved by the FDA, is an excellent way to treat facial wrinkles. These wrinkles are caused by contraction of the underlying muscles. To remove these wrinkles, BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport® is injected through a very small needle in minute amounts into the muscles that cause these contractions. The BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport® treatment is performed in 10 to 15 minutes in Dr. John LeRoy’s Atlanta office. There is no recovery time, and the procedure can easily be performed during the lunch hour.
Introduction to Botox® and Dysport® –“Botox on the other hand removes those lines that are formed by muscles around the eyes in between the eyebrows and the forehead and what it gives you is a rested look. It does not freeze your face as some people say. If it is done correctly, you should look rested, youthful and very happy.”
BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport® reduces wrinkles caused by contracting corrugator and procerus muscles by inhibiting nerve signals that cause the muscles to become tense. BOTOX® Cosmetic/Dysport®, or “botulinum toxin”, was first used to treat strabismus and blepharospasm (eye conditions), and cervical dystocia (a neck muscle condition). Botulinum toxin blocks the chemical acetylcholine, and thus calms spasmodic muscles. It was found that botulinum toxin relaxed frown lines in these patients, and soon it became a highly sought-after treatment for cosmetic patients.
BOTOX® can also be used to treat migraines and hyperhidrosis also known as excessive sweating
The BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport® procedure takes about ten minutes to perform and does not require the patient to take time off for recovery. Dr. LeRoy will carefully examine all prospective BOTOX® candidates: taking into account all medicines the patient uses, any allergies he or she may have, and the repeated expressions contributing to lines and wrinkles. During the procedure Atlanta plastic surgeon Dr. LeRoy will ask the patient to make various expressions – such as frowns and squints – in order to locate the contraction points in his or her browline. After Atlanta cosmetic surgeon Dr. LeRoy performs BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport® injections, the muscles will relax within a week and the patient will look rested and significantly less stressed.
BOTOX® Cosmetic/Dysport® results, while effective, are temporary. To maintain results, patients should receive treatment every three to four months. To date, there is no evidence that continuing BOTOX® Cosmetic or Dysport® treatment destroys muscles – but it has been found that the length of time that BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® is effectively lengthened with repeated treatments.
